Shannon Murray

Smiling woman with long blonde hair and a patterned black top.

For over 25 years, Shannon Murray has devoted both her professional and a significant portion of her personal life to tackling the urgent issues of housing insecurity and homelessness. Her journey commenced after earning her Master’s Degree in Social Work from UCLA in 1996, and working at a small agency located in Skid Row, where she first observed the profound effects that compassionate and strategic support can have on people’s lives. This initial experience, along with the years of dedicated work that followed, has fueled a lifelong commitment to developing meaningful and sustainable solutions for those facing housing instability. As the General Manager of the Homeless and Housing Division at Watts Labor Community Action Committee for the past 15 years, she has led efforts to develop innovative strategies that address not only housing needs but also the broader needs of individuals and communities. Furthermore, as Chair of the SPA 6/South LA Homeless Coalition, she aims to inspire and empower the next generation of social service providers and advocates.

Everyone deserves access to stable housing and supportive services. Likewise, equitable and accessible health care should be a right for all. We understand that the needs and supports are interconnected. She is deeply passionate about crafting interventions that empower individuals, disrupt cycles of instability, and offer genuine pathways to sustainable and dignified living. Additionally, as a Founding Board Member of the Sanctuary of Hope, she promotes these ideals by working with young adults to provide essential support and help them establish a solid, independent life during crucial years. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the California Community Foundation’s Centinela Valley Medical and Community Fund, which aids eligible hospitals and community organizations in fostering community engagement and enhancing health opportunities for economically disadvantaged residents in the South LA area.

Throughout her professional journey, she has consistently upheld the fundamental belief that true social support transcends mere service provision – it focuses on empowering individuals to assist themselves and one another. Her ambition is to keep expanding the horizons of what holistic community support can accomplish, consistently prioritizing the distinct needs, strengths, and potential of the individuals we serve.
