
Rev. Sonja Williams is currently serving as Minister to Women at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles under the Leadership of Rev. Dr. Kelvin T. Calloway, Senior Pastor. Rev. Sonja has 38 years in recovery from substance and alcohol abuse and has spent the last 38 years of her life being passionate about the women of her church and the community passionate about ministry, outreach, teaching and the spiritual, mental and overall wellbeing of women especially those women impacted by substance and alcohol abuse.
Rev. Sonja was called to the ministry in 1988 and was ordained in 1991. In 1991 Rev. Sonja met and married Calvin Williams, Assistant Pastor at Christian Love Baptist Church together they began an outreach ministry targeting those members of our community that were impacted by substance and alcohol abuse.
1994 Rev. Sonja Williams founded Reclaim, Recover and Restore Outreach Program (3R’s) which provided substance and alcohol abuse counseling, recovery programs, transitional and permanent housing. It is estimated that Rev. Sonja Williams and her husband housed over 1500 men, women and children and facilitated the reunification of over 250 children from within the foster care and juvenile systems.
In 1994 while speaking at the Downtown Los Angeles Mission, Rev. Sonja Williams caught the attention of major contributor of the Los Angeles Downtown Mission and she awarded five “full ride” all-expense paid, scholarships to Pacific Christian College, Orange County, California. Because of this great opportunity not only were four Los Angeles High School graduates chosen for these awards Rev. Sonja’s daughter was a recipient of one of these scholarships and now works for the Congress of the United States of America.
